As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly embedded in everyday life—from education and healthcare to governance and entertainment—the urgency to ensure its ethical development and application has never been more pronounced. Recognizing this, UNESCO, in collaboration with LG AI Research, has announced the development of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on the Ethics of AI.
Ultimately, this global learning initiative aims to equip learners worldwide with essential tools and knowledge.
It also focuses on developing critical thinking skills to engage thoughtfully with AI. UNESCO emphasizes that ethics must be central in AI design and deployment. Ethics should not be an afterthought in AI systems.
A key highlight of the MOOC is creating a global repository of best practices. This repository will showcase real-world examples of ethical AI implementation. To build it, UNESCO launched a Call for Best Practices.
Submissions are invited from governments, private sector entities, startups, civil society groups, and academic institutions.

The initiative actively seeks to collect a diverse range of practices, including:
-
Governance frameworks, strategies, or policies promoting ethical AI
-
Tools and applications upholding principles such as transparency, fairness, explainability, and inclusivity
-
Multistakeholder collaboration models fostering responsible AI development
The MOOC will feature selected submissions, offering learners a direct connection between theoretical concepts and practical applications across global contexts.
UNESCO’s call emphasizes that contributors who participate will play a pivotal role in shaping how people teach, understand, and apply AI ethics worldwide.
What comes next?
The MOOC is currently under development, with planned contributions from leading AI ethics experts, universities, and institutions worldwide.
The call for best practices is now open. Whether you design, develop, regulate, or study AI, this is your chance to contribute to something truly meaningful.
